• Overview

I predict that 2015 is going to be a great year for ISU. I’d even go so far to say that it may possibly be our best outlook yet. The impact of the global economic crisis has hit many these last few years, and ISU was by no means immune, but thanks to the incredible support of our Sponsors, Students, Alumni, Board and most importantly our Staff we have turned a corner and are now looking at future opportunities to grow. Thanks to this tremendous effort, the end of 2014 saw the University debt free for the first time in ISU’s history. Cash flow is strong and we have worked hard to secure amongst others new programs for Alumni such as the Chairman’s Circle, and all of this has led to the greatest financial security we have enjoyed for a long time. This puts us in a great position for our programs and 2015 will see us back in the USA in Athens, Ohio for the SSP15, graduating a new MSS class in September and starting to recruit for our next SHS/SP in Australia in early 2016 with the SSP16 in Israel to follow. Stay tuned for the 2017 SSP location. So now is a perfect time to catch our breath and to start thinking strategically and tactically about how to grow with a view to ‘Sustainability’. No organization can permit itself to become static and progress is always needed. ISU has therefore considered the changes that are happening in the space sector and has decided to anticipate. Income sources need to be diversified and also the offering will have to be constantly adapted to the changing environment and needs a critical re-examination. For this reason all important stakeholders of ISU, be it Sponsors, Faculty, Staff, Alumni or Students, are separately contacted and invited to forward strategic directions and thoughts how to reach these new goals. There is an ideal ‘launch window’ for such exercise at present as we have obtained a phase of financial stability at mid-term, covering the period 2015 and 2016. Over the years ISU has most of the time, forced by the circumstances, reacted to the situations. Time has now come to … act instead. It is a process that will be followed very diligently to avoid ‘errors of the third degree’ (finding good solutions for the wrong problems), but the ultimate goal is clear: let us jointly develop a strategy that makes ISU more robust and sustainable from 2017 onwards! Thanking all of you for your positive inputs to this process! Faithfully yours, Walter Peeters ISU President
